Mosquito traps – proven mosquito killers
Male mosquitoes are actually sensitive vegetarians, living on nectar and plant juices. Only females drink blood, for protein to make eggsIn a study to determine whether these tiny vampires actually choose their victims or feed indiscriminately, researchers at the University of Florida found that mosquitoes do, indeed choose. “One in ten people is highly attractive to mosquitoes,” reports Jerry Butler, PhD professor emeritus at the University of Florida. Scientists have also discovered that genetics account for a whopping 85% of our susceptibility to mosquito bites. While there’s nothing we can do about our DNA we can do something about mosquitoes….REPEL, REDUCE, KILL!
DEET – protecting the public since 1957, DEET continues to be the chemical of choice used in repellents. However in 2005 the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) began recommending alternatives.
Picaridin – while relatively new to the US, the product has been used worldwide since 1998. Marketed as Cutter Advanced, it has proven to be as effective as DEET but is more pleasant to use because it has a light, clean feel and is virtually odorless.
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus – available under the Repel brand name, this product offers protection similar to low concentrations of DEET.
Reduce the number of mosquitoes by eliminating their favorite breeding sites. Standing water on the ground or in vessels such as flower pots and abandoned tires can help breed millions of mosquitoes in a matter of days.
There are a number of mosquito devices that purport to kill mosquitoes however the most effective of these appear to be mosquito traps. They work by emitting stimuli that biting mosquitoes find attractive – such as carbon dioxide, heat, moisture and other mosquito-friendly by products. They attract, then trap and kill those blood seeking female mosquitoes.
But with so many of these mosquito machines on the market, ranging in price from a few to a thousand dollars you need to know how safe, how effective, what works and what doesn’t. In short, what’s the best mosquito trap for you and your family.
